Hulan & Kaufman Class
Dead Sea Scrolls
During the next 13 week Sunday School segment (March 4-May 27) the Hulan-Kaufman adult Sunday School class will be undertaking a study of the Dead Seas Scrolls. The study will be based primarily on the work of Dr. Gary A. Rendsburg who holds the Blanche and Irving Laurie Chair in Jewish History at Rutgers University. He is recognized as a worldwide authority in Dead Sea Scroll history, having published more than 120 scholarly articles. The Sunday School class will discuss the discoveries (1947-1954) in caves above Qumran near the northwest shore of the Dead Sea and the process by which they were disciphered. Attention will be paid to important information gleened from a large repository of scrolls in Cairo, Egypt. What these scrolls reveal regarding Jewish life and beliefs of the time will be a focus of the class. The class will also discuss very Biblical scripts found at Qumran and what they reveal about early Christianity. All of the above will be dicussed with an awareness of the backdrop of historical events of the times including Roman occupation and destructions of the Temple. The course will be taught by Hank Mills. For those who have not been involved in an adult Sunday School experience, this should prove to be an interesting one. The class will meet at the regular Sunday School time (9:30AM - 10:30AM) in the Education Building. There is no text for the class. The instructor will provide reading materials as the class progresses.
